Child Advocacy Volunteers Uganda (CAVU)

For A strong, Effective, Plan For the Children

Joseph's story

Kayemba Joseph  started studying at S.t JOHN’S nursery and  primary School in 2015 in primary three (third grade). His mother had passed away in 2014 and was abandoned by his biological father. Since then, he has been taken care of at by our project. Before coming to Child Advocacy, he had missed multiple years of studies because of the economic situation at home. With his ailing mother not being able to provide, he often sacrificed his academic future to care for his mother.

Since Joseph has been at CAVU, he has grown into a respectful and compassionate young man. He is often in the top performers in his class. He wants to become an engineer.

Through his life of struggles, Joseph is always one to smile. Because of Child Advocacy Volunteers Uganda, he was able to have an academic future and dream. Without Child Advocacy and his sponsors, Joseph may not have had the chance to study and would most likely be wandering on the streets.

Mbabazi Peace is among one of students who joined our sponsorship program in 2015 after the death of her parents in 2014 by HIV/AIDS. Due to our community outreach programs we were able to reach her when she was leaving in one of the extended family. However, Peace had dropped out of school since the heads of the family had too many children they were paying school fees for who were their own relatives. Then Peace had to stay at home and we met her when she was busy doing domestic work. We had to find out the way to take her back to school since she is bigger dreams and aspirations than anyone could imagine. However, she was quiet and came with very little previous education. She started with a sponsorship in primary four (fourth grade) because of the lack of finances at home.

Thorough her determination and dedication to school, Peace became a star athlete, talented singer and a top academic student. In 2014, Peace lost her last living parent, but instead of letting the tragic experience impact her in a negative way, she used it to fuel her future for success.

Peace now has gone as far as primary five she is currently studying and getting free quality education to prepare her for her bright future. Without the support of sponsors through Child Advocacy Volunteers Uganda, Peace says she wouldn’t have gone to school and her future would’ve been grim.

Ssekanwagi Twalib began our sponsorship in 2015 as a young boy. He stayed at his grandparent’s home near our office in Mubende.  However, his grandparents could not afford to pay fees and other scholastic materials since they were aged and very poor. We also discovered that Twalib’s feet were infected with hundreds of painful, parasitic insects called ‘chigoe fleas.’ He had to be removed from the school immediately to be treated. The Director took Richard to the hospital where the insects had to be removed by scalpel.

Twalib has now grown into an intelligent boy who is shy to no one. He’s growing to be a leader. All of this was possible because of his sponsors through Child Advocacy Volunteers Uganda. Without them, Richard’s life would be completely different. As of 2014, today poor Twalib is in primary four (grade four) and he is acquiring free education under CAVU. However, his future in school is uncertain because of an unfortunate lack of money.Nasanga Josephine and Namanda Sharon are sisters; they stay with their mother in poor house their father suffered from HIV/AIDS disease and died when Sarah was six years and Gift was seven and a half years old. The mother has a small garden where she plants food for her family and sometimes she work in gardens of other people for their survival. As they reached primary three, their mother was not able to make them continue with education and at that point when their pastor reach out to us to give them a hand. Now Gift and Sarah are getting education under CAVU and they are willing to continue to study. Sarah wants to be a doctor to help other children because she suffered from deadly diseases at her young age and Gift wants to be a lawyer to help people who are voiceless especially children and mothers.
